A few months ago The Anti-Counterfeiting Blog reported about a new "roll your own cigarette" (RYO) trend where customers roll their own cigarettes in shops that provide the materials and equipment to do so.  


Just to refresh your memory, the City of New York has sued and won a case against RYO shops forcing the shops to close. Now lawmakers in the State of Michigan are having a similar issue with RYO but their resolution is quite different. The State of Michigan is trying to pass a measure that would require RYO cigarette shops to pay $2.00 in taxes for every pack that leaves a RYO shop.

We are living in crazy times where extreme views and opinions seem to be dominating the news and public opinion. This is happening because we are living in a world where the finical system we have depended on for so long is being called into question, whole industries are disappearing and extreme states of existence (poor and rich) seem to be getting more extreme before our eyes.

 

It is not surprising then that the authentication and anti-counterfeiting stage is also seeing very extreme opinions take route.

counterfeit-indian-currencyMember of Parliament Chidambaram Palaniappan of India has proposed a new law to make production, circulation or smuggling of counterfeit currency a terrorist activity in India. This is one of many attempts by the MP to classify actions that compromise economic security as terrorist threats.


Under the current draft of the law, no differentiation is made between the intended uses of the money. In other words, someone who intends to use the counterfeit money to finance bomb making and someone who intends to use the counterfeit money to finance a shopping spree at the mall are treated the same.
