Track and Trace for Pharmaceutical Brand Protection |

SecuringPharma recently reported on the industry responses to the FDA's call for track and trace proposals for pharmaceutical brand protection. The FDA wants to create one standard track and trace system for pharmaceutical brand protection in the USA.
There are a lot of interesting proposals but it is important to remember that one size does not fit all, especially in this global market. Track and trace is great but not every company that sells pharmaceuticals in the USA makes their drugs there. In fact, many generic drug companies manufacture much of their inventory in India and Brazil. The track and trace systems for brand protection that work in the USA might not be able to be built and maintained properly in these countries. Drug companies will most likely have to invest in a track and trace system for drugs outside the USA that that is compatible with the FDA system but that uses fewer resources.
InkSure will be giving a presentation about track and trace in emerging markets at the Global Forum on Pharmaceutical AntiCounterfeiting this week. InkSure has just finished developing a portable track and trace device that can work without constant connectivity to electricity or a central database, often a requirement for track and trace systems. The system can help find counterfeit and diverted drugs before they reach the USA. Systems like this one should be considered by any pharma company that operates in emerging markets.
