Ontario's liquor control board recently issued a warning for a certain brand of wine because many of the bottles in circulation are suspected to be counterfeit.

We recently spoke to a Canadian lawyer that tried to warn the LCBO about the possibility of counterfeit wine in Canada several years ago. The lawyer was told that the Canadian supply chain was so secure that counterfeit wine could never get in. Well, it happened.

Now the LCBO has to play a cat-and-mouse game with very strong offence and a lot of money. It would have been better to implement a defensive anti-counterfeiting program years ago.

Whenever someone says to us "We don't need your anti-counterfeiting technology, we don't have a counterfeiting problem," we have two general responses:

1. How do you know you don't have a counterfeiting problem? Until you test every product in your supply chain, there is no way to know.
2. Don't wait until you have a problem to implement an anti-counterfeiting program. Once you have a problem you will have to be on the chase to contain it. It will also cost you a lot more money to play offense and could cause a big PR problem.
